It's been a while since I've posted a Words..., but this weekend I came across this Monday-worthy quotation in an EW (one of my favorite magazines) review of a new Nora Ephron anthology, due out this week. As so expertly embodied in her films and essays, this late director/journalist/screenwriter/producer/playwright/novelist/blogger was an absolute champion of flaws. As an audience, we still smile as they come to life in her subjects and characters again and again.
As the legacy of Ephron's work makes clear, there's something to be said for embracing an appropriate level of skeptical humor towards ones self. After all, she credits her success to "a sense of the absurd that makes it difficult for [her] to take many things terribly seriously.'' (Dear God, yes.) Yes, I make mistakes. But I am also more than willing to recognize how ridiculous I can be. This is not to be mistaken for "negativity" or self-loathing. Nope, it's my laugh. My true flaw is to ever laugh at someone else's expense. Let's be honest, this is something that we can all work on.
Anyway, bloggers and blog readers, I suppose this is yet another a friendly reminder of how being your admittedly imperfect self makes for a life that is worth sharing with others. No one is truly interested in perfection in the long-term because let's be honest: we all know that it's a lie. Champion your accidents and your insecurities. Make a mistake and tell about it. Your laughs and my laughs make us kindreds...
Wishing you a happy, silly week!
